UPDATED - MIA - Mr. Pickles. Last seen 27 hours ago.

UPDATE : Pickles RETURNS. A buddy of mine and I drove around a bit. Couldn't find him. When Kevin left, I went over to the neighbors again as I had done multiple times. This time he came out from behind a fence in the backyard (also checked many times)

The friendship continues.

/////////////////////////

Mr. Pickles loves going over to Judy's. That is. Sneaks over. I believe that he goes to snog the cat she left over there. However, I can usually go find him and chase him back inside. In the 11 years I have had him as a friend, he has been an indoor cat. This year I have allowed him to go outside with me. He is pretty happy with that arrangement.

Yesterday morning he snuck off to Judy's and I had to chase him back. I was growing upset with him constantly doing this. Decided to give him a time out in his wire carrier. Let him out after 30 minutes. Went to go work on the trailer. Placed a gate blocking the doorway and a very tall, spiky cactus above it.

When I came back around in the afternoon, he was gone. Jumped over the cactus. He was no where to be found. Not at the neighbors. Not in the surrounding country side. The 10-15 some odd acres I know. Those places he goes over this year. Nothing.

He has been gone some 27 hours. No sight of him this afternoon. Not even a body lying in the ditch. Zilch. Nada. 11 years of friendship. Nothing.

I don't know what to say about all of that ....

  1. I'm sure you were major stressed out looking for your buddy. Glad he's back but now what are you going to do with him and running free?

    1. Install a storm door on the front door that i can leave open for air, letting the cat look out, but keep him securely indoors.

  2. Dang, I'm glad I didn't see the post before the 'update', I'd be worrying down here for you. I know the friendship/bond we have with our animals and I'm sure glad he reappeared, none the worse for wear as they say. A screen door is a great idea. Keep him close, you've been through a lot together (and he's a high flying guy too!).

    1. You bet! I wasn't feeling too hot about the matter. Especially when you have to go to sleep knowing he is outside. (As he has been exclusively an indoor sort of guy).

He literally is. Was my co-pilot for the last aerial mapping season. ;) Not many cats have that honor.

  3. You know as well as I do there is only one thing that can come between two guys that are buddies. It is not money. It is not food. It in not shelter. But a Lady can break up an old friendship. Why don't you go find her and bring her home for Mr. P. If you just lock him up he will run out the door at every chance. He might hurt himself tearing a whole in the screen door and that would make you mad after spending money on the door. I only see two choices, get him fixed or bring her home for him. They will both result in a happy buddy and a piecefull house. Good luck my friend.

    1. It is always a Lady. :) (Or can be.) As I mentioned below to Jenny, Mellow (the cat), has never taken to me. I simply feed her. The food disappears. Pickles continues to go over there. So I believe she is still around.

Believe it : My cat is actually neutered. However, he was a few years old when I got him from the Humane's. I expected him to be clipped then. It wasn't until a few years later that I took him in to have it done. The whole time he was an indoor cat.

I have been reading that most cats will loose the urge when you clip them. Certainly if you do it prior to sexual maturation. Some cats though will continue to be 'Teaser Toms' if they already went through maturation before being snipped.

You are correct, Frank, I would be pretty sore if he ended up tearing out screens! :)

  4. One solution would be to bring second cat that was left behind (unreal that someone would dump a pet like that) inside and let them live with you so neither escapes. Glad he's back safe.

    1. Thank you. I am happy to have him home. My neighbor had very little choice for her cat. With one, she took to a friends place in Denver, (Sadly that cat ended up getting eaten by a fox while there. ) The other one, she decided it would be better if I continued to feed her as she was an indoor/outdoor cat. Emphasis on Outdoor. Had been so for many many years. She believed that if she took the cat with her to another state, the cat would get loose and not find her way home. The cat's home has been the few acres around us for all this time.

The only option was to let her stay. I have continued to feed the cat in her absence. However, Mellow, has not bothered to take a liking to me. I simply know she is there because the food disappears and Pickles goes over there.

We have decided to attempt live-trapping Mellow so she can go live with another friend of hers. (the change in thought stemming from, What happens when the house IS sold. I do not plan on continuing to go over to their property and feed a 'stray' cat.)

  6. When I first saw the title of the post my heart dropped. I had a favorite kitty disappear once and we never did find her. Such a heartbreak. So glad Mr. Pickles is okay!

  7. I am sure you know this but all rv /camper furnaces operate on 12 volts dc. and not 110 volts ac. The blower motor and the electronic control boards are 12 volts dc. I did not want you to try and hook it up and fry the entire furnace. I think it would be a great addation to the tiny house and would take up little space. You could use the small duct lines to get heat directley to any area you would like. I was just thinking about it and thought I would warn you.

    1. Right. Although it is listed as being both a trailer furnace or mobile home. I'll have to look at it again, although I recall seeing 110vac leads from the board.... If not, I would have to get a converter of sorts. No worries though as I have to get one in order to utilize a shureflo pump for indoor showering anyhow.

  8. You really do not need a programable thermostat on it at all. Just set the regular thermostat at the lowest tempature you wnat the tiny house to get down to any time the fire or the sun do not provide the needed the furnace will kick in and provide what you need. You and the cat are going to be so spoiled this winter. Ha Ha

    1. Here is to a spoiled existence of drywall, furnaces, dates, and the occasional drink now and then!

    2. You are correct though. I could get a simple unit with a specific temp and either an up or down button to change it. After all. The purpose of the furnace is not to be the sole heat source. That would be costly. Rather to maintain a minimum temperature when I wish to sleep and not deal with waking up to play fire-tender.

The other day I did a cursory look up at how to wire it. It is only two leads needed for a simple thermostat, correct?

    3. Yes 2 wires. Most are a mecury bulb inside that acts as a switch when a by-matalic coil tilts it to turn off or on. Check the debris from the camper you may find the thermostat that the heater was hooked up to. and Check the debris from the camper Most have a converter to charge house batteries and operate the 12 volt stuff when the camper is connected to shore power. (plugged in at a camp ground) I just picked up an old class c motor home to take the grand childern to out of town bike races so I am in the learning mode about RVs. A lot of the rv stuff operates on 12 volts like the water pump, range hood fan, some refrigerators, overhead vent fans, and lights. Some time the camper frig can operate from propane, 12 vdc, or 120vac depending on how the switches are set
