I bought some Wonderberry seeds from Baker Creek a couple years ago: YUCK!!! I didn't like the jam or the pie...neither did my chickens! I pulled those suckers out so fast it would make your head spin...those icky things re-seed!! I'm still pulling them out. I do like your golden beets...a favorite of mine..beautiful in a beet salad!
:) I'm not averse to them, however, I can easily see why you are. It is a very particular flavor. We love our beets. Next time we plant them it is going to be an entire bed!
Looks very nice and I love how green everything is. Looks like you have both purple and white eggplant (white has lighter colored leafs at laest on mine). Onion bed looks like it as damaged by animal but you might as well pull them out because once the tops are brocken they won't grow much - we break them on purpose when bulbs are ready so they start drying. Broccoli and beets look lovely!
The two varieties are ping tung and aswad. (The fat 3lbs iraqi one from Baker) The plants themselves are quite different as you know. Im just not sure which one is which. I'll go on a limb and say the purple one is the ping tung because last year we grew a japanese variety and it was purple.... lolI had an idea. Tell me your thoughts. If we cut off the tops wouldn't it re-sprout much in the same manner as it did in the first place when you planted sets? It's ok though either way. Pulling up a 3oz (golfball) one yields enough in bulb and greens to make a dish. No waste!
it will re grow if you cut it but it won't increase bulb - it will go into flower for seeds. same would be if you left them in the ground as is, they rest and then go to seed.
For shame. :D We're happy with growing broccoli for the first time. Plenty of eating, regardless of the not overly large heads. Decent though. The flavor is a bit sharper than store bought. I'm curious if its because they are sweeter in the fall crop or if we used compost instead of lawn dirt they would have imparted a milder flavor from it. Could be heat. Much to learn!
The broccoli in stores were grown with help of chemicals and alot of water forcing them to get big fast but not with alot of flavor. At home you get concentrated flavor. It also depends on variety.
