I moved into the cabin with the cat this afternoon. (I may shed a tear)
After spending ten months of life living in a tent, here we are. Dry inside a large cabin with 14ft cathedral ceilings.
It took lots of perseverance of living through 18F temp winters in the sleeping bag, traveling all over, spending another year for the aerial mapping company. (Which I took the previous year off not wanting to do it anymore and spent time at home) Saving everything I could.
Here, I sit with the cat, as he walks around exploring the new surroundings.
Debt Free. Paid. 3 acres outright. Solar derived Electricity. No monthly bill. A cabin. Life with such minimal overhead that I can keep it going without sacrificing myself to work where it could destroy friendships/relationships in my life.
Now of course there is plenty more to do, but Im dried in. The metal roof went up yesterday. The door today.
I know that today is Sunday, but tomorrow is going to be my seventh day (It took six full work days at it to get to this point - with the great help of my neighbor and another neighbor to help raise the walls.) AND you know darn well that we are going to REST.
In a few days it'll be time to install a fireplace. From there I'll become greedy and no longer accept 40 degree temps at night. I'll balk when its not 70. :-)
Whew.... It is finally here. A liberated life. I cannot believe it has finally culminated itself. Great community/ neighbors around me. People to have in life. A great cat. Everything to be thankful for.
I gather its Autumn now today. What a coincidence that I am inside.
Tomorrow those great neighbors are going to help me bring over a sleeper sofa and a lazy boy. All for a good price. It is going to be nice to sit in a comfy chair and watch TV while sipping tea or Rum.
My choice.
*Sigh*
Thank you all! Everyone for following along with the blog. Thank you all for being my wing man on this wild journey. It is my hope that y'all stick around a bit longer as I finish up the cabin and come spring time, go back to our roots at the Stay @ Home-Gardener!
- Cloud and Mr. Pickles
p.s. Ill add some new photos tomorrow of the finished roof/door and our new digs.
Wow. Just reading your post brought a huge smile to my face. You deserve it. You and Mr. Pickles have a nice evening and don't worry about us sticking around a little longer, you couldn't get rid of me if you wanted to, ha. Can't wait to see it all unfold.
ReplyDeleteWell Buddy, Turns out I made it inside just before it got really BRRR. ;-)
DeleteI am so excited for you and Mr. Pickles! Love reading your posts...keep up the good work and stay warm!
ReplyDeleteGlad you stopped by to comment. Oh, it is much warmer out of the wind in the Cabin even without the fireplace yet. Low tonight is 38F. Looks like I decided to come inside just in time for Autumn.
DeleteI can finally breathe a sigh of relief. You and Kiki are inside and safe and dry, and soon will be warm and comfortable. I'll bet that sleeper sofa will feel great....rest well, my friend.
ReplyDeleteI'm so looking forward to the new photos! Oh, and you couldn't get rid of me if you tried ;-)
No matter how hard I shake... ;-)
DeleteI'm looking forward to the sleeper until I can purchase a fancy foam king bed! But, alas.... Insulation and drywall are more pressing than the bed!
I found your blog thru Annie's Granny and spent the last two evenings reading it in its entirety (Including all the comments). Wow! How wonderful to see your dream coming to fruition. I can't wait to see the gardening you will do on 2.88 acres. I am in one of those HOA restricted communities with manicured lawns. Our HOA has recently taken possession of two houses-one for non payment of dues and another because they painted their house orange without approval-gasp! I have managed to turn about half of my backyard into a vegetable garden and orchard but have to keep it neatly tucked behind the fence to stay under their radar.
ReplyDeleteAnyways, just wanted to say thanks for sharing your journey with the world.
Oh, man... That is HOA in it's finest hour. In principal I can see its use, however, in practice....
DeleteIt was different when moving from AZ with all the HOAs to Michigan where there were not any. People simply had pride in their homes and thus took care of them. So much simpler.
Here in a few days we have a big vote on whether to adopt new covenants or Dissolve the entire ordeal. Im voting for the latter. Although, would be content for it to return to its defunct status as its had for years.
Thank you for following along though! I hope to keep it interesting reading. :)
I have goosebumps reading this. I am so happy for you. You are HOME! Yes, there are still things to do, but you are finally home. Thanks for sharing your journey with us.
ReplyDeleteI truly am. :-) It was a great feeling going to sleep and waking up to a new world this morning.
DeleteGreat to hear you are out of the weather. I could never make it there. It was in the 60s this morning and it was way too cold for me. I like it when it is shorts and T-shirt weather. Too cold for shorts = too cold. Ha, Ha. You can't shake me either, I am along for the journey, as long as you will post and I can still read. Take a few days off and enjoy your labor and then get back to work. Best wishes from Virginia.
ReplyDeleteI am trying to transition to being temperature greedy... that is, in a few days when I get a fireplace installed, I will no longer accept the 18F temps of the last winter when I saved up money but suddenly find myself accepting no less than 70s!
DeleteAwesome news! So glad you were able to get this done before winter and not going to be outside in sleet and snow that's about to hit your area, and that your kitty also safe inside now as well. Huge congrats for a great job and hope you'll enjoy your first good break on soft sofa :)
ReplyDelete:-) I know! Apparently we did have our first snow last night.
DeleteI'm excited to see the pictures! Congratulations. This is such good news.
ReplyDeleteLOL. It truly is, thank you.
DeleteAre you going to move the little house over to touch the deck, or will the deck stay apart as a destination on its own. I always think of a deck as attached to the house, but have seen many in books that stand on their own. I guess Granny and I should just wait and enjoy the suprises as you build and finish.
ReplyDeleteI think the House on Wheels will stay put, the deck will be a small walk away. Kind of akin to walking into you back yard to the gazebo for drinks and bbq.
DeletePerhaps I should refer to it as more of a gazebo or pergola then?
