An evening of Snow, but I Have another Window.

The forecast is for it to snow this evening and continue through until late tomorrow morning. According to the weather channel... my area is to get 8-12inches? Sounds nice enough. :D However, In order to watch it, before I would have to either stand outside or leave the door open. Ok, unless I wanted to stand on a ladder and look out the stain-glass window.

The two remaining windows arrived on Tuesday. Managed to install one of them this afternoon before it became too cold. Caulking doesn't like to cure below 40F. :) I might as well oblige it.

The forecast for the upcoming week is Teen temperatures at night. Plus more snow later in the week. I should be able to install the final window during the next day or two when it is at least 40 ish. ;-)

At the moment, I have a spare pillow case draped over the window, functioning as a curtain, until I can purchase some white sheer cloth. Allowing light to come into and heat the place but keep nosy viewers out.

Having the new window gives the place a different feel. Ehrm. I feel much more exposed? Having light and glass/scenery out of my peripheral view.

hah. These months of just being in an enclosed box/cave of sorts has my thinking skewed. I'll come around!

It is nice having an easily accessible view though!

Window installed. One left to go. 2 feet wide, 3 feet tall. Need trim work for Door and Windows.

    1. HAHAHA. Look at me! My first clear window and soon to be watching 8-12 inches of snow coming down outside of it!

  3. I always worried about you not having a window. I once stayed in an apartment while working for a month out of town that didn't have a single window. Drove me insane not to just see the world outside on occasion. I think we need windows to the outside to connect us. So I guess the other one goes on the other side of the door? And that's it for windows? Nothing upstairs on the back side of your sleeping loft? Might be nice at night to lay there and look out at the sky while falling asleep. I'm just sayin. ;-)

    1. The house is designed around Passiv Solar principles for the most part. No windows on the north end because they do not add to the heating, only let out heat. (No solar gain from the north). The East and West side could have windows but those tend to get too much heat. The south is filled with glass for heat gain. Eventually one has a porch roof to keep out the high angle summer sun, while the low angle winter sun still gets in. The stain-glass allows me to see outside and watch the world go by while I lay in bed. :) It is just at my toes instead of my head!

To reply on your other comment, the northern part of the plot has a creek bed that is dry at the moment. I will have to show it in another video. That is where I am getting all the thin seasoned branches of Black willow. It doesn't grow very big or thick up here but there is a whole pile of it in the creek bed. I've been burning wheelbarrows of it. Cleaning up the creek, while providing me with much needed BTUs!

    2. Light and openness/ secured surrounding are very primal to us. Take power outtages. It isnt the lack of service that bugs people. It is the lack of light. Sheer darkness weirds on people. Merely having a bright lamp at night when there is a black out makes things seem much more calm. Haven't you noticed that?

The change of having the 'extra' light and views out of my periphery this afternoon changed my perception of the place. It felt a little less secure and more open. Perhaps Vulnerable? As before, the only window was up top. It let light in. Wasn't dark. When I was up stairs I could see out. However, with the door shut. The little box felt not claustrophobic but 'secure'.

Have you ever wondered about why old towns feel cozy while large open new cities with their suburbs just feel strange?

It is a primal thing. A relationship with nature. The old cities where the distance between buildings, the street and the other side with more buildings and the height of it all makes us feel secure. ;-)

    2. It is having a homey feeling, aura! 1st, I was thinking under the windows... I ought to put some white shelving on the outside, underneath them. Place to put some potted Cactus or other plants. :P

    3. Oh, most definitely 1st.!

Cactus? Oh, no...they are too harsh. You need something to soften the lines. Red petunias and white sweet alyssum spilling out of dark green window boxes, with dark green shutters framing the stained glass window. Me 'n 1st. will fix it all up for ya! You're welcome.

  5. Rhubarb grows like crazy here and its pretty. You could plant some on either side of the door and it would look filled in all summer.

In other gardening news (I provided my own tangent!) horseradish, potatoes, and garlic grow well too. My yard seems to specialize in thistles though.

    1. :) Mmm, potatoes. Which did you grow? What method? You'll have to put some pics up for me to take a look at. Lovely weather huh? :)

    2. Colder than a well digger's butt tonight!

I grew garlic successfully this past season and I planted more for next year. I have pics all ready for a long blog post about it. I keep hoping to find time to put it together. I'll let you know when I do.

I have rhubarb, but it definitely does its own thing, I can't claim it as resulting from any skills I might have. *grins* I do have 3.5 gallons bags of it diced up in the freezer waiting for pies though!

    3. Wow. That is a lot of Rhubard, unless you happen to enjoy it. I've never had the pie.

    4. I do enjoy it, although it can be a bit of an acquired taste. I have plans for strawberry rhubarb crumbles, strawberry rhubarb jam, and I'd like to experiment with rhubarb pickles and see how it turns out.

I'm completely new to canning, but I'm going to learn!

    5. Wonder if that jam would be good on a buttered english muffin, with hot tea of course. :D

  6. There is nothing more peacefull than watching the snow fall through a window, from a warm spot with a hot cup of tea. The only thing better is knowing that you do not have to go out in it until you want to go out. Ha Ha I loved the video, but could not watch it until I was home from work. I really enjoy watching your progress and seeing your ever improving living conditions. I know you take great pride in what you have done in so little time retalively speeking. Have a great weekend and I will check back with you next week. Any special plans for Thanksgiving?

    1. Special plans. Hmm. Not really. I have new friends out here but no family. My neighbor is heading to Western Colorado. I will prolly just enjoy the solitude and the antics of the cat.

Warm peace is the best. :)
