Flowers

Things around the garden are flowering. :) I'm enjoying looking at them.

A bunch of "I forgetcha machalits"
 Cat loves it.

Catnip - Thanks Jenny

Mizuna Flowers

First English Pea flowers

When should they get flowers in Michigan?

Should I have expected english pea flowers to be out much earlier than now? They have been in the soil for a while. Some of them have been getting chopped off and I suspect some animal was munching the tops. Besides the peas and other pretty flowers the broccoli is starting to head up. :D    Happy Gardening everybody!

    1. Is it? hmm. The previous owner must have planted it. We never did. It has been a part of the english garden the whole time we have been here. :) He is pretty content with himself lying on top of it, or under it. Watching the world go by.

    2. Jenny, you are pretty good at spot identifying things in the garden here. :) Perhaps I should take a photo of that tree in the front yard that Im curious about too! lol. Thanks again.

    3. I have it in my own yards so I instantly recognized it. send a picture of the tree and see if I can figure it out. :)

  2. I think you might be in a slightly colder area than I am, and I'm just now getting my first pea flowers. I planted them on 3/15. Birds can decapitate pea plants in the blink of an eye. Some years seem worse for bird damage. Last year I had to cover all of my peas (a pain when the tendrils tangle in the cover), but this year they've not had any bird nibblings at all.

Your broccoli is ahead of mine. I haven't detected any heads on mine yet.

    1. BIrds huh? I wouldn't have pegged them for the damage.... Do they actually eat it or just destroy things for the fun of it? :)

How long do you get out of them before them just die from heat etc?

    2. Mine never last very long, as our summers get very hot, usually very early. It depends on the variety I plant whether I find them worth the trouble. Wide rows of "Little Marvel" usually give me good yields, but the last couple of plantings I've made have been different varieties....some that get fairly tall, and I got very minimal yields so ended up ripping them out to make room for pole beans. I'm anxious to hear how Ed's "Burpee's Garden Sweet" variety performs. It sounds very promising.

Sugar snap peas, on the other hand, bear for me much longer and the yields are always good.

    3. Oh good. I have some snaps working on coming out. Growing english peas, snaps, and chinese noodle bean for green beans. :)

      Thanks for the link.

  3. birds have been munching my pea plants too :( they just grew to the top of a small fence, and now little sparrows can sit on the fence and nibble away.

  4. Your peas are looking very healthy. I've been having problems germinating peas for some reason. My germination ratio is 1 germinated to every 8 seeds planted. Just sowed more over the weekend.

    1. Ouch, Kelli! Have you always had issues with them or just this year in particular? Granny taught me yesterday that the missing tops on the peas over the last couple weeks has been pesky birds.

Think I might have to purchase some tubular material to create netting hoops over things so as to not worry about giant Hares and other lovely critters.

Nice to see you around again. Thanks for commenting.
